Huawei denies mobile network breach at UK hearing

Huawei's Global Cyber Security and Privacy Officer, John Suffolk, has attended a hearing about the safety of the UK's telecommunications infrastructure. He's told the hearing that Huawei has no interface with the mobile network. "We don't run networks, and because we don't run the network, we have no access to any of the data that is running across that network," said Suffolk.

Huawei was invited to attend the hearing on June 10, 2019 by the Science and Technology Committee of the House of Commons of the British Parliament on the construction of British telecommunications infrastructure.

Suffolk told lawmakers Huawei welcomes any analysis or inspection of their products in order to further improve quality. He added, "We want people to find things, whether they find one or one thousand, we don't care. We are not embarrassed by what people find."

He explained that at present, only 30% of Huawei's products and accessories are manufactured by the company itself, while the rest are completed via global chains. He says Huawei monitors all the linkages closely to avoid technical loopholes.

On the UK's side, BT's Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Vodafone - which has a 5G services agreement with Huawei - and several other business affiliates, were present.

In May, the UK telecommunications service provider Everything Everywhere (EE) officially launched its 5G service, based primarily on Huawei's Massive MIMO, while Huawei launched its first commercial 5G smartphone in the country.

The UK is said to be in a leading position among European countries in the development of 5G, and several carriers planning to launch 5G services this year.
